Where to Stay in Sri Lanka: My Tried-and-Tested Accommodation Guide

Planning where to sleep on a fast-paced island trip can be overwhelming but after testing out everything from breezy coastal guesthouses to misty hill-country stays, I’ve locked down my favourites. Combining my pre-trip research with what I actually experienced on the ground, I’ve put together my ultimate accommodation guide.

Here is a breakdown of every place I stayed across Sri Lanka including my honest thoughts, local tips and photo highlights.

Negombo

Where I stayed: Che's Place (152/C Greens Road, 11500 Negombo, Sri Lanka)

The Vibe: A simple house with just two rooms for rent, felt less like a commercial guesthouse and more like a quiet private home tucked right into a local neighbourhood.

My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in one of their air-conditioned rooms with a comfortable queen-sized bed and an ensuite bathroom, which was a welcome relief after a long journey and after a day of adventure. The caretaker actually shared a bittersweet piece of news during my stay that I happened to be their very last guest as the owner is planning to rebuild the property soon.

Location: It was super convenient as it was close to the bus terminal and Cargills supermarket for quick supplies, and just about a 1km walk over to visit St. Mary's Church.

My Verdict: A humble, perfectly positioned spot to kick off the trip. Knowing it might soon be gone makes having experienced its quiet charm feel all the more special.

Kalpitiya

• Where I stayed: Kalpitiya Guest House (Mutuwal Road, Hospital Road, 61360 Kalpitiya, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A rustic local stay that turned out to be an unexpected lifesaver after a stressful, blistering start upon arrival.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I was supposed to stay at another accommodation but the owner cancelled on me at the last minute. I had arrived outside the property and stood stranded under the scorching noon sun, waiting and trying to contact them for a long time until they finally replied with a cancellation notice. Left in a bind, I had to return to the bus terminal and hastily search for another place to stay, which led me here. The room itself was a simple fan room. The owner asked if I wanted to top up for the air-con but I declined. The room had two adjoining queen-sized beds complete with a mosquito net. Despite the chaotic afternoon, it provided a much-needed roof over my head to decompress and reset.
• Location: Tucked right into the heart of town and about 1km from the bus terminal, making it relatively accessible after dealing with the travel disruption.
• My Verdict: Not the smooth stay I had planned for but a resilient backup option that saved the day when things went sideways.

Anuradhapura (2 nights)

• Where I stayed: Kingfisher Hostel (521/78, 6th Cross Street, New Bus Stand, Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A simple 1-room non-air-con hostel located right above a workshop, felt like crashing at a local friend's place than a commercial lodge.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in their compact 4-bed mixed dorm, which features massive, surprisingly spacious double beds for solo travellers equipped with individual fans and large lockers. It has basic shared facilities, keeping things humble and deeply authentic.
• Location: Conveniently located about 350m from the new bus station, putting local eateries, shops and the surrounding transit hub within easy walking distance.
• My Verdict: A no-frills, incredibly affordable basecamp packed with local warmth. Perfect for backpackers looking to dive straight into the ruins without fuss.

Jaffna

• Where I stayed: Green Grass Hotel & Restaurant (33 Aseervatham Lane, Hospital Road, Jaffna, Sri Lanka) Note: The property shares grounds with The Valampuri Hotel and this room was located on the Valampuri side
• The Vibe: A practical, no-nonsense local hotel tucked away down a quiet lane, serving as a straightforward and functional base for exploring the northern peninsula. 
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in one of their simple air-conditioned rooms which provided a welcome, cool escape from the intense Jaffna heat. The property features basic amenities including an outdoor pool and an on-site restaurant. 
• Location: The property is about 1.3km from the bus stand, putting the town centre within easy reach. 
• My Verdict: A reliable, unpretentious budget-friendly stopover that gets the job done when exploring the heart of Jaffna.

Sigiriya (2 nights)

• Where I stayed: Kalana Homestay (Sigiriya Road, Sigiriya, 21120, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A welcoming, peaceful home-style retreat nestled near the ancient cultural hub, offering an authentic and tranquil taste of local village life right on Sigiriya Road.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a simple, budget-friendly room equipped with a ceiling fan. The family running the place was incredibly kind and hospitable, even welcoming me with a refreshing drink upon arrival.
• Location: Superbly central, situated right along the main road making it an easy walk to restaurants and shops.
• My Verdict: A humble, deeply authentic and budget-conscious base packed with genuine local hospitality. Perfect for anyone looking to experience the heart of Sigiriya village without any frills.

Dambulla

• Where I stayed: Milano Grand New Rest House (50 Kandy Road, Dambulla, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A welcoming, unpretentious roadside property that punches well above its weight class, driven entirely by the unmatched warmth and hospitality of its host.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a spacious, comfortable aircon room.
• Location: Superbly convenient and positioned just opposite the main bus station, making it an ideal, hassle-free transit hub for exploring the Dambulla Cave Temple and the wider Cultural Triangle.
• My Verdict: A fantastic, budget-friendly stopover elevated by exceptional personal service that turns a simple night's rest into a highlight of the trip.

Kandy

• Where I stayed: Villa 92 City Stay (92 Peradeniya Road, Kandy, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A charming heritage manor house conversion blending Moorish and Kandyan architecture, offering a character-filled and cultural alternative to standard modern hotels.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a comfortable 6-bed dorm which provided a welcoming and historic atmosphere to unwind in after navigating the busy streets of the city.
• Location: Superbly convenient and about 400m from Kandy Municipal Central Market and 700m from the Bogambara Bus Terminal with easy walking access to the Kandy railway station and the city's main sights.
• My Verdict: A distinct, heritage-infused stay that combines old-world charm with great transit accessibility right in the heart of Kandy.

Ambewela

• Where I stayed: Sushi Guest (Rendapola Road, Ambewela, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A quiet, unassuming local lodge nestled up in the chilly hill country, offering an authentic, off-the-beaten-path stay far removed from the heavy tourist crowds.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a room with 2 queen-sized beds. The weather was naturally cool, so no aircon or fan was required. In fact, I welcomed the thick blankets provided.
• Location: Tucked away about 400m from Ambewela train station, making it a convenient base to catch the Ella Odyssey train to Demodara as well as exploring the surrounding dairy farms and hills.
• My Verdict: A humble, budget-friendly backcountry pit stop that works well if you need a straightforward bed for the night in the central highlands.

Ella

• Where I stayed: Ella Mount Hostel (Sudumal Cottage, Wellawaya Road,Ella, 90090, Ella, Sri Lanka) 
• The Vibe: A practical, social local hostel serving as a straightforward and functional base for exploring the Nine Arch Bridge.
• My Experience & Practical Details:I stayed in an air-conditioned 10-bed mixed dorm with ensuite bathroom, which provided a simple, sociable setup and an affordable place to crash after a day of hiking. Note that you have to climb quite a long flight of stairs up to reach the property.
• Location: Conveniently positioned close in the heart of Ella, making it easy to access cafes, grocery stores, transport and nearby trails. 
• My Verdict: A reliable, unpretentious and budget-friendly stopover that gets the job done for backpackers exploring the hill country.

Mirissa

• Where I stayed: The Hostel Mirissa (12 Sunanda Road, Mirissa, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A clean, social and easygoing coastal base that blends a laid-back backpacker atmosphere with wonderful hospitality.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a comfortable, air-conditioned 8-bed dorm, which provided a cool, spotless space to crash after a long day in the sun. The property features great communal areas and an exceptionally welcoming caretaker who makes sure you feel right at home from the moment you arrive.
• Location: Tucked away on a quiet lane about 200m from the bus stop and roughly 700m to the harbour where boats depart for whale watching, with Mirissa Beach and local restaurants just a short walk away.
• My Verdict: A fantastic, budget-friendly social hub that pairs spotless facilities with genuine warmth, making it an ideal spot for coastal exploring.

Galle

• Where I stayed: Gishi's Happy Stay (Assetline Finance Limited, Galle, 80000, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A warm, friendly and homestay experience driven by genuinely kind hospitality that makes you feel instantly welcome.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a comfortable, clean room equipped with a ceiling fan, providing a peaceful retreat after exploring the historic streets of the city.
• Location: Superbly convenient, sitting about 65m from the bus stand and roughly 500m from the historic Galle Fort, offering effortless access to transport, Cargills and eateries.
• My Verdict: A wonderful, budget-friendly homestay choice highlighted by exceptional personal care and a comfortable, stress-free stay.

Colombo

• Where I stayed: City Beds Colombo (Sir Chittampalam A Gardiner Mawatha, Colombo, Sri Lanka)
• The Vibe: A practical, urban transit stopover offering straightforward and functional accommodation right in the heart of the capital's commercial centre.
• My Experience & Practical Details: I stayed in a clean, air-conditioned partitioned room that provided a cool and comfortable space to rest after navigating the bustling city streets.
• Location: The accommodation is about 850m from the Colombo Fort Railway Station.
• My Verdict: A convenient, no-fuss city hub that works exceptionally well if you need an accessible base for catching a train or handling business downtown.

Looking back across the itinerary, this collection of stays truly highlights the incredible diversity of Sri Lanka in miniature. From the historic, mountain-framed streets of Kandy and the crisp, high-altitude tranquility of Ambewela to the sun-soaked surf vibe of Mirissa, the colonial charm of Galle and finally the fast-paced urban energy of Colombo, each stop offered a uniquely functional and welcoming home base. Whether it was the warmth of a homestay host, the practical comfort of a transit-friendly hostel or the distinct atmosphere of a heritage building, these budget-conscious spots proved that convenience, comfort and local character can easily go hand-in-hand.
